Twenty five years ago the band began to practice its craft. Moving from practice hall to practice hall (a variety of places including the visit area of the Manhattan Detention Center, a room at Bell Telephone in Tribeca, its current practice halls in Queens and Brooklyn) the band kept one thing in focus all the time: "Have fun, but play well!"
This philosophy has carried the band throughout its twenty five years. The band has won numerous prizes and honors for its performances. Travel has taken them from Florida to California, from Texas to Montreal, Colorado and Glasgow, Scotland for the 1999 worlds.
Over the years the band has spared nothing in achieving its excellence in performance. It has picked the minds of the greatest Pipe Band Musicians in the world, Angus McDonald, Dixie Ingram, Roddy McLeod, Alistair Fletcher, Andy White and John Wassman to name a few. On top of this, talented musicians from all over the NY/NJ metropolitan area have come to play with the band(its membership is not restricted to members of NYC DOC)talented musicians who have lent their time and efforts and along side members of the department have represented the DOC pipe band and NYCDOC for the last twenty-one years.
Our founding Pipe Major, Bob Hanley, has retired from DOC after 28 years of service. He also retired as pipe major after 21 years. As he enjoys the life of a retired gentleman piper he will continue to be an important advisor to the new PM. His experience, musical and in matters of administration, will be a valuable resource to the band’s new administration. Pipe Sgt Joe Korber took over as PM. Any questions regarding the band please feel free to contact us.
